Memories of Kit

Kit was born June 3 at 4.20 am in Scarborough hospital to the sound of the dawn chorus. His entry into this world wasn't straight forward as he had the cord round his neck and had to be delivered by forceps! The first thing I remember looking at him were his big beautiful eyes. He was a good baby as babies go and such a cute little toddler. He started to walk just before he was a year old and his first steps resembled a monkey....one hand up in the air!! He had problems with getting back down though. He used to get himself up, and then end up crying because he dare not let go to sit down! He went to Aunty Sheila's playgroup with Melanie, Vincent, and Gavin Egan, and Charlotte when she was old enough till he was school age. It was about this time when he was diagnosed with type one Diabetes. This came as a shock to the system for a sweetoothed little boy. One minute munching mars bars and then being told he had to count everything, chocolate was a no no and he had to have injections twice a day must have been difficult for him to say the least. I remember staying in hospital for a week with him learning to look after the disease, I think it changed his attitude to life in a way. Those early years were spent with many trips to Scarborough Hospital under the care of Dr Stanton. We also had so much help from Susan Taylor who was to be his godmother when we got him christened. She was a nurse and second mother to him. He always had a mischeivous side to him. He had wanderlust and I used to barricade the yard to keep him in while he played and he used to find a way out, nearly gave me a few heart attacks! He once escaped only to be found quite a way a way in an old ladies house eating easter eggs. Other things that spring to mind were when he put the hose pipe into the postbox next door at the shop and when he and Charlotte took it upon theirselves to 'deliver' the papers to the village. The papers were waiting outside the shop waiting to be taken in for people to come and collect them! They nearly set fire to the house when I walked into his bedroom to two guilty looking children only to find they had hid the candle they were playing with under the bed........lit! There was never a dull moment. His first school was Nawton County Primary. I would be lying if I said he was a scholar like his sister. Kit was more interested in the school of life. He once ran away from school and got picked up near Snainton. Luckily the man got out of him that he was diabetic and what school he went to. He ended up at Scarborough, he told them he was off to a birthday party! Kit always had wanderlust. He also was one of the best for having dodgy friends and being gullible, not a good combination. It led him into allsorts of boyhood troubles, but never changed his love of people and friends. He was one of the most loyal people I am ever likely to meet. When he left Nawton he went to Ryedale and ended up going to a special needs in Sedbergh because of his diabetes and the problems it brought about at school.During this time he used to go hunting alot on his pony Firecracker, they jumped allsorts, they really clicked those two! Horses always went well for him, he was nice and quiet with them. He started to learn to shoe and that held him in good stead for the rest of his life, even though he never qualified properly it didnt mean that he was less of a blacksmith. Work wise he of course shod horses, worked for Thomas's, did a bit of building, some spud bashing etc. But it was for his music he really lived and had finally found a goal in life with the course he was doing at the Jam Factory. The future was bright and it was taken from him, life is so unfair sometimes. I hope they have top of the range decks on the other side Kit xxxxxxxxxxx
